Dzogchen lineage · Lineage holder
Garab Dorje is honored as the first human teacher of Dzogchen, the Great Perfection. Lineage histories trace the teaching from the primordial buddha Samantabhadra through Vajrasattva to him, and from him to his disciple Mañjuśrīmitra. Tradition holds that when he passed into rainbow light he left Mañjuśrīmitra a final testament, the famous Three Statements that Strike the Vital Point.
Known for Hitting the Essence in Three Words (tshig gsum gnad brdeg), his last testament
Neither his dates nor his birthplace can be fixed historically, and modern scholars treat him as a figure of sacred history, not a documented person. Sanskrit forms of his name differ between sources (Prahevajra, Pramodavajra, Surativajra). Treasury of Lives has a profile for him (TBRC P0RK998) but no biography. born_sort is a placeholder that keeps the lineage in order.
